Eating Disorder Vocabulary and Terminology Causes Confusion
I just came back from the Academy of Eating Disorders international conference in Salzburg. To my chagrin, one thing I discovered is that eating disorder treatment professionals around the world can't agree on eating disorder terminology. They still use different terms to describe the same thing, and it makes discussing eating disorders very confusing. I mentioned this before in an article titled: DSM: Does It Matter How We Diagnose Eating Disorders?
We Need a Common Vocabulary for Eating Disorder Discussions
In this eating disorder video blog post, I've included a little demonstration to emphasize why all of us in the eating disorders community should use common terminology.

Hello Laura,
Thanks for your insight for the conference.
And thanks for your all your loving work in this area. I did a presentation for personal trainers last month on eating disorders. Many feel that it is an eating problem and can feel that they can help in some way. I focused on the root causes much of what I read from your work, and I focused on prevention. One question was asked "What can I tell them?"
How do I find out more information about how the general public or in this personal trainers can help?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest regards,
Cheryl
I look forward to the next conference at which we can meet, but know that you have a steep hill to climb if you can get everyone using the same alphabet let alone singing from the same hymn sheet.
