Components of Binge Eating Disorder Recovery
There are many components to binge eating disorder recovery. In spite of this, often times, individuals with eating disorders are told to "just eat" or to "just stop eating," depending on which eating disorder they are suffering from (How To Talk To Someone About Their Eating Disorder). Recovery is much more complex than only fixing our behaviors with food. Eating disorders are both a mental and physical disease which require many different treatment components for binge eating disorder recovery.
The Nutrition Component of Binge Eating Disorder Recovery
One of the biggest components of binge eating recovery is nutrition counseling. In order for your body to re-balance itself, you will need to eat in a stable manner. I followed a meal plan on my road to eating disorder recovery. Doing this gave me reassurance that I was consuming the foods that were right for my body, not having too much or too little. Having a dietitian on your eating disorder treatment team is necessary when creating a meal plan to follow. Only when we have begun to stabilize and appropriately nourish our bodies can we begin to work on our minds.
The Psychotherapy Component of Binge Eating Disorder Recovery
Working with a therapist or counselor allows you to process everything that goes on during your recovery as well as dig into the potential causes of your disordered eating. With his or her help, you can begin to heal your mind.
Personally, my therapist knows me better than anyone. She is someone I can speak freely with and express my worries or concerns to. This kind of support person is more than helpful while on your recovery journey (Eating Disorders Therapy: Psychotherapy and Group Therapy). She is an important component of my binge eating disorder recovery.
Binge Eating Recovery Components Combined
When you work on healing both your body and mind simultaneously, you allow your whole self to get better. We cannot expect to recover if we only work on one piece of the puzzle.
Remember, eating disorders are about more than just food. Eating disorders serve as a negative coping skill that helps us deal with difficult emotions. In order to recover from both the mental and physical symptoms, all components of binge eating disorder recovery treatment are necessary.
As always, do not be afraid to reach out for help. You deserve recovery. Stay strong.
