You may want to check into the actual laws regarding work and medical coverage. The situation you describe has not existed in most states for several years. One, if you work, even a little, in most states you will retain eligibility for Medicaid. The program has different names in different states, so you may need to do a little research. Two, even if you lose payments, you do not lose Medicare eligibility for 7 years. I do not advise going out and better a job that will pay you $1001. That would be foolish, but, on the other hand, I have been working under the substantial gainful activity level since 2005 and have remained eligible for Medicaid. This is in spite of the fact that my monthly check actually is too much for me to qualify. Do some research on what the laws really are in your state. You may be surprised.
