Adult ADHD's Ode to Iceland (and other like-minded countries)

August 12, 2013 Elizabeth Prager

If you ask anyone who knows me the one thing I'm most obsessed with or the place I feel most at peace or the land of my dreams, she will say, "Iceland." I don't think my constant waxing poetic about Iceland has made it onto the blog yet; it's about time that I write my Ode to Iceland from an Adult ADHD standpoint. Hopefully, by the end of this post, it will become apparent why Iceland is the place of our dreams.

Varied Weather

I remember clearly getting off the plane at KeflavĂk Airport with my wife, Sarah, and having definite feelings about my vacation. The air was wet and the sky grey. I assumed my entire trip to Iceland was going to be like this. We rented a car at a local rental place and when we went to unlock the doors, we saw a huge rainbow. It stretched from one side of the sky to the other and it would the first among many during our stay in the land of fire and ice. During the next few hours of driving, we were subject to rain and sun and rainbows. There is no way to be bored with weather in Iceland - it keeps you on your toes.

Varied Landscapes

So, like I said, Iceland is dubbed the land of fire and ice and rightfully named it is! The first glimpse of the country post-airport is closely akin to traveling on the moon (I assume - I have not actually been to the moon). Lava rocks fill the roadside for forty or so minutes until you arrive at roads streaming through the greenest grass you've ever seen. Eventually, looking left and ride provides extraordinary views of waterfalls, sheep and not another soul besides the person you've chosen to bring on the trip. A few hours further driving along the southern part of Route 1 (the road that goes all the way around the island) allows you

a view of the fingers of an enormous glacier. Further still, you come to an inlet where the water is filled with icecaps. You will never get bored of the landscape in Iceland, because the variety of landscapes is only surpassed by their individual beauty.

Non-Varied Escape from Everything

Iceland does not just have the beauty; Iceland has the peace our brains are all searching for. Let's face it - the way our brains work can certainly lead to our easy distractability. Iceland just doesn't allow it. On a hike up a waterfall, I found peace in such a salient way. I couldn't see anyone one, I couldn't see a single telephone or internet wire. All I could hear was the sound of the breeze and water preparing to throw itself over the fall. If Iceland isn't just what all of our doctors would order for us, then I just don't know.
