When Black Mental Health Suffers, We Aren't Taken Seriously

February 27, 2020 Tonie Ansah

As Black History Month comes to a close, I thought, what better time than now to shed some light on black mental health conditions--an issue I find all too common in the black community. Now I can't speak for all black people in the world, but I can speak from my own experience and the experiences others have openly shared with me regarding black mental health.

Black Mental Health Challenges

In today's video, I discuss the lack of support black kids and adults receive from family and even mental health professionals when we express our mental health symptoms. I cover topics that came up in conversation with other black males, the just-pray-about-it response, and what I think is a step in the right direction for black people struggling with mental disorders.

Check out the video and tell me what you think. Or,  leave a comment below and let's discuss your thoughts on mental health in the black community.

As a black woman, I can relate and feel this. And it's hard to get support and feel love from our own people, let alone be taken seriously as well by professionals too. I've endured trauma/abuse and alot of mistreatment from having a mental illness diagnosis and seeking help. I'm still seeking help and support but it is still difficult.

Serena, I know that struggle all too well. I finally, after gosh, 13, maybe 14 years have found a physician who listens to my concerns. Not only that, he calls back before the end of the day, addressing any questions I may have had. For the first time, I feel heard...but it took a very long time. While it is difficult, try not to give up seeking support. I'm sending love your way! Thanks for commenting.
