What Is Group Therapy? How It Works, Why It's Useful

When struggling with a mental health or substance abuse disorder, there are a variety of treatment methods available. One of the most commonly known methods that is used at many different locations and in all levels of treatment is group therapy. Group therapy is a form of psychosocial treatment in which a small group of patients meet regularly with a therapist to talk, interact, and discuss current problems with one another.

Each individual responds to treatment differently, some do better in group therapy than others. However the results are usually overwhelmingly positive for those involved in well facilitated group. If someone is seeking therapy, this can be an effective option, especially for those recovering from a traumatic event. It can be very helpful to hear other peoples perspectives so that the individual doesn't feel alone.
