Self-Harm and Noon: Angel Versus Devil

July 13, 2013 Jennifer Aline Graham

In this audio blog, a paragraph from a chapter is read that brings forward the issue of Angel vs. Devil. Below is the general idea for the novel, Noon, that I recently published. One character is in the mental health unit at a big hospital in a little town where she receives treatment.

And yes, she self-harms.

An Overview of Noon

A cancer patient. A pregnant teenager. A cutter.

Fay, Cady and Josie were destined to meet. However, the circumstances were never expected to be at a crowded cafeteria in an area hospital surrounded by surgeons, mourning families and sickly patients.

Whether struggling in the stuffy mental health center, vomiting into a pan on the oncology ward or nervously rubbing her growing belly, each girl is going through an experience that will change their lives, and the lives of others, for forever.

The Quickest Psychology Lecture Ever

Here’s a quick psychology lecture that goes along with the Angel and Devil scenario. Sigmund Freud created the idea of the Id, Ego and Superego. The Id is the part of someone’s personality that hopes to accomplish all desires and needs so the person is truly satisfied. The Ego is concerned with reality and hopes to deal with all difficulties in an appropriate way. Lastly, the Superego holds all moral and ideal thoughts.

Therefore, the Id represents the Devil and the Superego represents the Angel.

Class has ended.

Self-Injury: The Angel and The Devil

As discussed before in some of my blogs, if you are a self-harmer, it is very difficult to ignore the angel on your shoulder because when an urge comes to harm, you have such an intense need to do it. It takes a lot of patience and self-talk to flick the devil away, and over time it will happen.

In this audio blog, I read a short paragraph from my novel, Noon, that brings forward thoughts concerning good versus bad when it comes to her self-harm. She wants to cut, but her mind continues to jump from positive to negative – between the Angel and the Devil.
