Mental Health Awareness Month During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Mental Health Awareness Month 2020 has arrived, and its timing couldn’t be better. The world remains in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and as the isolation and social distancing orders drag on, we need to be as vigilant about our mental health as we are about our physical health. Some important things to be aware of:
Watch for signs such as these in you or your loved ones:
- Irritability, anger
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Physical symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, digestive discomfort, shakiness, aches and pains, chest pains or heart palpitations, headaches
- Persistent negative thoughts that are hard to shake
If you notice depression symptoms or anxiety symptoms like these, call your healthcare provider to see about a phone consultation. Online mental health therapy is also available from many sources. Links at the bottom of this article will direct you to resources.
Be aware, too, that despite the current coronavirus restrictions, you can do things every day to nurture your mental health. Try things like:
- Setting aside every day to do fun, relaxing activities with loved ones
- Ensure that everyone in your home has time to themselves every day
- Step outside for fresh air several times per day
- Exercise with videos inside or go for a walk or run outside
Many things are out of our control, but our reactions and little actions in our own world are still in our control.
