Going back to the basics of binge eating disorder recovery was just the refreshment I needed in order to stay on track. Learn more at HealthyPlace.

I'm returning to the basics of binge eating recovery because lately, I've been feeling not so strong in my recovery. I've been experiencing urges to binge, along with feeling down and wanting to isolate myself. Being aware of what was going on, I realized I needed a recovery refresher to keep me on track. This refresher of sorts includes me going back to the basic skills of binge eating recovery that helped me get well at the beginning of my journey.

The Basics of Binge Eating Recovery

Get More Recovery Support

Seeking more support is a basic of binge eating recovery. Recovery is always going to be full of high and low moments. It is essential during these times, when we are feeling not so strong that we seek extra support ("Binge Eating Disorder Support Groups").

Don't Ignore Your Feelings

As I said, over the last few weeks I have been feeling a little off when it comes to my binge eating disorder recovery. I have learned throughout the years that this is something that should never be ignored. Every time in the past when I did not attend to those feelings, I ended up back in my eating disorder.

This time, I was not going to let that happen. I realize that I am experiencing these symptoms because my system is trying to tell me something. To stay well, I need to figure out what that something is. It is in these times that we need to focus on prevention from slipping back into old binge eating behaviors.

Discuss the Basics of Binge Eating Recovery in Therapy

I decided to set up a session with my therapist to process what was going on as well as figure out what I should do to prevent my symptoms from intensifying.

My therapist gave me some wonderful advice. She told me that I needed to go back to the basics of binge eating recovery -- those skills that were of tremendous help when I first began my journey.

Often when we have been well and abstinent from behaviors for a period of time, we start to lessen our attention to the tools of recovery. I know for me this has happened. Being overwhelmed and over-busy, I have let some of my self-care practices fall by the wayside.

Since my session, I have chosen a couple of things that I want to start incorporating back into my daily routine. I have chosen meditation and journaling because relaxation has been a challenge for me lately. I need to remember how helpful these skills are and get back to using them on a regular basis.

It is completely normal for life to get in the way of recovery. Sometimes it just feels like we don't have time for it all. Though it is tough, we need to make time for our binge eating recovery skills to keep life full of wellness.

I challenge you to look back at your week and see how much time you actually spent on recovery. If the answer is "not much," then try working on bringing back one or two skills that are helpful to you. Go back to the basics of binge eating recovery.

Keep focusing on wellness. You can do this.
