Introduction to Hannah O’Grady, Author of ‘Relationships and Mental Illness’

May 2, 2019 Hannah O'Grady

My name is Hannah O’Grady, and I am ecstatic to say that I am the new author for Relationships and Mental Illness here at HealthyPlace. Mental health has played an important role in my life, both personally and professionally. I am eager to combine my passion for writing, relationships, and mental health for my readers, and I look forward to engaging with those who read this site.

Hannah O'Grady's History of Mental Illness

I was formally diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder in middle school after years of therapy and intense symptoms. Over the years, I have also struggled with depression, an eating disorder, trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling), and self-harm. Growing up, I was a difficult child who had intense mood swings and bouts of anxiety that severely impacted my life and relationships (familial, social, and romantic). I was confused for years, wondering what was going on inside of my head. I saw first-hand the way that my symptoms negatively impacted my interactions with those who meant the most to me in my life. However, with the help of medication, amazing therapists, and the support of my friends and family, I’m happy to say that I am in a much healthier and more stable place.

Hannah O'Grady's Mental Health Today

After receiving the help and support I needed and putting in the work to cope with my diagnoses, I began to advocate for those around me who were also struggling. I am a crisis text line counselor, where I am responsible for assisting those who are in moments of crises. Furthermore, I am currently pursuing my Masters of Social Work at the Columbia School of Social Work, where I am focusing on health, mental health, and disabilities. After graduation, I hope to become a licensed mental health counselor.

For Relationships and Mental Illness, I hope to share both my personal and academic knowledge with those who may be dealing with diagnoses, and give you the advice that I wish I had received when growing up.
