Traveling Can Clear Your Mind of Unsafe Thoughts

Sometimes it is hard to stay in one spot for so long. The same old routine could bring on boredom, which could turn into anxiety and frustration. Nobody likes to be in the same place, doing the same thing for a long period of time. While a schedule is good to have, it can become something you are so dependent on that when it changes, you too could begin to change in unsafe ways.

Some people do not have the opportunities that others have when it comes to traveling around the state or to other countries. Some people may go their whole life without witnessing other cultures and learning from their traditions. However, if the opportunity does come, jump on that adventure.

Because that adventure could be just what you need to clear your head and start a safer life for yourself and avoid self-harm.

We’re all different when it comes to finding coping skills that help get us through our urges to self-harm. However, traveling could be a coping skill you’ve never really thought of before. I’ve mentioned in another blog that a parent at a work event would travel on a bus for an afternoon just to get away from the chaos of life. She would watch those around her and realize that everyone carries some kind of baggage even if she didn’t know exactly what that baggage was.

Going Somewhere New Can Give You a Fresh Perspective

Recently, I traveled to Massachusetts for yet another wedding and got to explore some places I’d never been to before. I got to wander around the town of Salem and see some historic sights and learn a little bit about the Salem Witch Trials – a part of history I find weirdly fascinating. I also got to experience a Block Party in Gloucester – a historic fishing town.

By traveling to new and unknown places, you can find out new things about yourself that could help ease the urges to self-harm.

On top of all these entertaining history lessons, the wedding was stunning.

The point is, by venturing into Salem and Gloucester and spending quality time with family, I realized many things about myself I may not have if I hadn’t traveled. I realized that even though I’ve never really liked history, there are some parts of history that I want to know more about. I realized how lucky I am to have such a close knit family who supports one another and would do anything for anyone – even if they don’t understand the struggles I’ve been through.

If you have the chance, travel somewhere you’ve never been and experience something unexpected and new. Just by getting out of your comfort zone, you are opening yourself up to the possibility of learning something about yourself that could help move you forward in a positive direction and away from self-harm urges.
