Never Let Mental Health Stigma Stop You from Achieving Goals

April 18, 2017 Leif Gregersen

Do you sometimes want to give up on achieving your goals? Mental health stigma can create barriers to employment or housing, but don't stop reaching your goals.

It is extremely important to your recovery from a mental illness that you not let mental health stigma stop you from achieving your goals. Inside of you are the abilities and passions that can make you happy if you pursue your goals and not allow mental health stigma to stop you from doing what you want most.

Mental health stigma can cripple a person if he or she lets it, but one has to remember that when you go into recovery from the effects of most mental illnesses, there will be a time when you will be able to return to school, work, or an artistic endeavor, and, for the most part, put your illness behind you. You don't have to let mental health stigma prevent your goals.

Achieving Goals in Spite of Mental Health Stigma Gets Easier

It is important to understand that in some cases, not all of your symptoms will go away, and you may also have to go through symptoms from your medications. Mental health symptoms like hearing voices or seeing things sometimes are helped by medications but not totally eliminated. Remember that over time, you will learn to cope with the symptoms of your illness and that mental health stigma will become easier to deal with.

Mental health stigma will decrease because you will be able to form groups of friends who won't stigmatize your mental health issue and they will most likely be more supportive of the goals that you have.

I have heard of a number of cases of people with a mental illness who overcame mental health stigma to accomplish amazing goals. There was a woman where I live who fought back against schizophrenia one University course at a time until she became a qualified psychiatrist and there was a man who built his wealth to over a million dollars who had bipolar disorder. There are also many cases in history of great people like Winston Churchill who had bipolar disorder.

The important thing to remember is that it will take some time to get a correct diagnosis for your illness and then it will take another chunk of time to find the right medications to deal with your unique problems. It will also take more time to adjust to your new life in recovery. But if you can get through all of that, then do not let mental health stigma stop you from pursuing your goals and dreams. You can have a full and happy life despite being diagnosed with a mental illness.
