Self-Care Is Important When You Feel Anxious
Self-care is important, but when life gets chaotic, self-care is the first thing to go out the window. What should be a priority becomes more like a reward I have to earn. I start telling myself that once I get through my overwhelming to-do list, then I am allowed to relax. This makes me more anxious, which actually makes it even harder to make self-care important.
What Is Self-Care?
Self-care is anything you do that enhances your mental, physical, or emotional health. It is time deliberately set aside to show yourself some love and allow you to regroup. Some examples of self-care are getting enough sleep, exercising, or practicing relaxation techniques.
Why I Forget Self Care Is Important
Unintentionally, I sometimes forget to schedule in time to take care of myself (Make Self-Care Number One on Your To-Do List). This is completely normal, but we should do our best to catch ourselves when this happens so we can get back on track.
Usually, when self-care falls to the wayside, it is because I feel like I do not have time. I start thinking that there's too much to do, and I need to spend all my time knocking things off of my to-do list. As someone with anxiety, this affects my stress levels even more intensely.
Make Self-Care Important Again
Once you realize you haven't been taking care of yourself, you can make the decision to prioritize it again. When we are anxious or overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, this is sometimes easier said than done.
If you're struggling to make self-care important in your life, keep these things in mind:
You Are Worthy
No matter what is on your to-do list, you are worthy of taking a break. You are worth feeling happy, relaxed, and at peace.
The World Will Still Turn
It is natural for us to think that if we take a break, everything will go wrong. We always think that everything needs to be done immediately. Make sure to break it down and fully understand what absolutely needs to be done, and what can wait.
Self-Care Makes You Your Best Self
Self-care isn't just beneficial for you, but everyone around you. When you take care of yourself, you're likely to be less on edge. You'll smile more, have more energy, and be happier in general.
