Yoga Is a Relaxation Technique and Anxiety Reduction Tool

February 12, 2010 Aimee White

As a follow up to the importance of implementing relaxation techniques into our lives, I want to share with you why yoga is my favorite relaxation technique and a great anxiety tool. It always amazes me just how refreshed and rejuvenated I feel after completing a yoga session. Even 20-30 minutes can greatly improve my mood. I feel like I have washed my slate clean, opened up the windows and let some fresh air in, and I get a burst of energy. Meditation is so important to reduce the stress in our lives.

An article on WebMD says "Doing yoga may reduce stress and anxiety. It can also help your body to be more flexible. Several studies have shown that yoga has health benefits such as improving a person's sense of well-being, helping to lower blood pressure, and helping people who have asthma learn to breathe more easily."

  • less stress- more calm
  • concentration and mood
  • heart benefits

Yoga on TV

I have set a goal to do yoga once a week. You can do yoga in the privacy of your home by ordering videos or watching television shows, or you can join a yoga class at your local gym.

It can be difficult to find a good yoga show if TV is the way you want to go. There are a lot of really cheesy ones out there. Also, many times, yoga is scheduled early in the morning when I am usually sleeping or when I have extreme morning anxiety, which makes it difficult to focus.

Here is what I have found that works best for me. I discovered a show on FitTV that I really enjoy. Its called Namaste Yoga. I have a DVR, so I record the shows and save a handful of them so that when I am ready to workout, it's waiting for me. I don't have to rely on the tv's schedule. I highly recommend this show for anyone that wants to do yoga in the privacy of their home. Here is a sample of what the show is like:

Maybe, one day, I'll be good enough at the yoga that I won't need the shows and I'll be able to do it all on my own. We are constantly storing stress in our bodies, and yoga is a great tool for our anxiety and to release stress. How do you prefer to do yoga? What has worked the best for you?

I started doing yoga when I started to have alot anxiety helped me deal with stress in my life. Along with my medication it has helped me quite a bit. Some days I get to busy to do it, I notice a big difference when I don't do it. I still can't bend like they do the video.. lol

One of my work colleagues organised yoga after work and it is a great success. Some people even fall asleep at the relaxation at the end, which is a wonder, because our workplace is fraught and can be frantic. My colleague is a normal Aussie bloke and the vast majority of attendees are also men who wouldn't miss yoga on a Tuesday afternoon.

Yes, Candice and Romina are right. I think its a stigma that more women tend to do yoga because it helps with flexibility and men want to be lifting weights and showing how strong they are to other men. In reality everyone can do yoga!
