Family and Friends Reaction to Self-Injury

October 6, 2012 Christie Stewart

One of the hardest things I dealt with as a self-injurer was disclosing my self-injury to family and friends. Over the years, I have heard from countless people that the reactions of their loved ones was difficult and made them feel even worse in the long-run. This is in large part due to lack of knowledge about self-injury, which then leads to fear and misunderstanding.

It is important to know how to talk to someone who self-injures, and realize that your reaction to their self-injury disclosure makes a big difference. In the following video, I address the family and friends of people who self-injure, and give some important tips on how to react in a helpful way to self-injury disclosure by a loved one.

The following YouTube link "I Have a Secret", might help " ease" the sharing of S.I. to family and friends.

Thank you for your comment and for the link. I value your feedback and respect you so much as an organization. I wouldn't have the courage to speak out today if not for S.A.F.E. Alternatives. -Christie, xsullengirlx

When I finally, after years, disclosed my self injury to my family, which I had no other choose at the time, they were of course confused, fightened. They were there for me emotionally. I felt like I had a solid support system, although I did have some people who turned their backs on me. Now I don't have that same support, I think everyone is tired of it. I told family 6 years ago at the age of 33. It's been 6 long years of ups and downs and I think everyone is emotionally drained. They definately aren't educated on the subject even bought a book for my husband but he never read it. I feel very alone now and feel like I am unaccepted.
