Things Verbal Abusers Say and Do
What does verbal abuse sound like? The tone and content vary from abuser to abuser, but the words affect the victim in similar ways. Victims hear horrible things from their abuser and they feel small, withdrawn, angry, helpless, sad, ashamed, and a hundred other horrible emotions - sometimes all at once.
At the beginning of my abusive relationship, I felt anger and stood up for myself leading to loud, circular verbal altercations that had no solutions. Later, after coming to believe that he was my hero, my savior, and my provider, I felt stupid and wanted to fix myself so he would love me. Much later, I turned away and left the house for a while which eventually led to increased physical violence and leaving forever.
Sometimes my abuser's words hurt when he jabs and attempts to provoke me on the phone. Mainly, the memory, the countless memories of the abusive things he's said to me rear up and try to convince me that his remembered voice is my own.
This list is only a partial list of the things verbal abusers say. It's not limited to my own abusive relationship. It takes into account what others report hearing, too.
Things Verbal Abusers Say:
- "Why don't you get a job so you understand the real world? Oh, wait - I forgot - you can't get a job because you're a stupid sh!t.
- "Quit your whining and crying. You have no reason to cry or complain! Your life is perfect because I made it that way!"
- "Bitch" (and the countless other names I won't bother to list)
- "I should have left you at the club with all the other whores."
- "If you were more like my mother I could worship you."
- "I hate it when you act so pitiful. Stop the waterworks and talk like a human being."
- "I can't stand to look at you. You make me sick."
- "You're such a great actress! You know how to get what you want, don't you?"
- "I can't believe I have to come home to you every day. How did I get involved with such a train wreck?"
- "I must be the first a$$hole to love you. You don't know how to please a man!"
- "You're fat and miserable and you make me hate you."
- "You always look like God stomped on your face."
- "Why do you care what I want for dinner? My favorites taste like crap when you make them anyway."
- "You used to be as beautiful as my ex, but geesh - time hasn't been good to you, baby!"
- "Those children are mine, will always be mine, and if you leave you'll never see them again."
Things Verbal Abusers Do:
- Deny they said anything similar to the list above.
- Defend what they've said.
- Analyze what they've said out loud, explaining that the words they used do not have the definitions you seem to think they do.
- Block you in a room so you can't leave and thereby avoid what they're saying.
- Talk horribly to the television but are really speaking to you.
- Flip open their knife to open a piece of gum while looking at you under knitted brows.
- Leave to do something else at the last minute when you had plans together.
- Take you out for your best birthday ever and then wind up berating you on the way home for not appreciating their efforts enough.
- Tell your children you need more happy pills to be a good mom.
- Change the topic of the conversation so you bounce from one place to another, never getting to the core of the issue.
- Accuse you of being a whore or a dummy or a _________ so often that they no longer need to say the words but can offer up a "look" and you know what they're saying (then they may deny it).
Okay. I have to stop. My stomach is literally upset right now after digesting the utter contempt and hatred some people spew on a daily basis.
If you're still living in this nonsense, learn about detachment and how it can benefit you. Maybe in time you'll choose to leave your abuser, and maybe you'll choose to stay. No one here will judge you for staying (I've been there and it can feel hopeless!), but please work on ways to make yourself feel better in the process.

Why did you want her back? So you could see your son? The siutation is bad for your kids too. You need to start documenting everything and get some witnesses to see how she behaves. Call the cops on her about the weed if you have to (make sure you don't smoke it). Then you can have custody of the kids not her. You can get a live in Nanny to look after the kids or have your family help you. Her behaviour is already hurting the kids. Is that how you want to teach your sons how to be a man? They see how she is treating you and they will grow up and may start resenting you. They may learn to hate women and become abusive. She's behaving this way because she's getting away with it and she acts nice sometimes to keep you hoping for something better. It's not you. You're not bad because she is behaving badly. She's the one who is wrong. Why are you taking this from her? You may be in your child ego state and you are letting her be the abusive parent. Were you abused by any females as a child? You are not a child now. You are a man and you don't have to feel like you are bad anymore. Remember, you are not a child anymore and you don't have to take this woman's sh-t even if you were the one to pursue her again. That doesn't mean she gets to do whatever she wants. Make plans to get out of that situation with the kids.
Hello all. I am in an abusive relationship. We have 2 beautiful boys. She is angry all the time. 8 years of tantrums and accusations. Smashing and throwing. Her tore baffled me. How do I react to an angry hate filled person? I can't see my friends, I work 12 hours shifts days/nights. On my days off if I want to see anyone even family just for an hour she screams, tells me to not come back. I'm lazy and do nothing at her house( I sold my house after pur first son born to get another together) she left me an took my baby and became pregnant with another. Then took me back and he is my beautiful son now. Other man she hates apparently. Spends all our money on weed. Goes out all the time but says she never goes out. I was happy once. Lots of friends now none. I can't watch tv at hers. Can't eat unless she does. Can't smoke unless she is. Can't talk to any women even mothers from boys school without anger at home. Crying. Then when she has weed money clothes chocolate all good again. I AM A MAN. I'm starting to believe its me. I clean up always an never complain about the mess. I make the dinners. I was told tonight agter 12 hour day that I wasn't allowed a bath. Never allowed to sleep in, days off take boys to school but go nowhere else. She sleeps in. I am a good person I think. I don't know anymore. I am sorry for you all. I am. Please have good and happy lives.
I have been married 23 yrs and have been called every name in the book, I hate the C word.. I have had my cell phone shut off text blocked, data blocked, so many times it makes me hate cell phones.
He had the sprint family locator locate my phone saying I was with in several miles and showed an address so he assumed I must be with some guy,have been falsely accused of cheating,seeing some one,trying to set him up..He has called me, text me non stop when I'm sleeping and threatens to shut off my phone..Shocking..When he works out of town he calls me all hrs accusing me of cheating..Paranoid I'm cheating,even asked our three grown daughters if mom is seeing some guy.He has always self medicated with meth every once in awhile but now it seems this yr is the worst..he has been self medicating with meth every two weeks, from what I have started to keep track of. He is very hyper sexual,watches porn on Tv and his phone when hes high or manic. But he lies,
lies,lies,lies about everything but accuses me of lying.He has taken my keys, gone through my purse phone..Says everything is his.We rent don't own,because of bad credit,his gambling and poor money decisions.The bank account is in my name because of his check writing history,so his check are deposited in my bank but he has a card to it. He has had his checks sent to him out of town instead of deposited into the bank to pay bills. He always drains the bank account but makes 100,000 a yr...Yet we are always broke.He says very mean hurtful things.He thought I was lying when i said I was on my period and wanted to see if I really was...He has always been verbally abusive when the girls were young,but I thought he was just being a jerk,tired from work. he worked out of town most of the girls young lives so i was like a single working married mother...His father verbally abused him and physically abused him. I used to fight back but that one time I ended up with a broken nose.. When he is normal he can be amazing, fun,giving.loving,tells me I'm the world to him, he says I'm beautiful,he's lucky to have me then flips a switch and says hurtful things.One of our daughters was diagnosed with bipolar 1 so I'm guessing he is bipolar too.He was diagnosed with adult ADHD after a physical fight. He went to jail ,took a anger management classes and they said hes full blown ADHD. He is the one that works and pays for everything so he holds that over my head,while I do all the cooking,cleaning,laundry,take out the garbage,clean the garage.i I have worked in the past and still took the girls to school,sports,doc,dentist apts.. but with a daughter that was diagnosed bipolar 4 yrs ago makes it tough.She cant work,sometimes cant sleep,gets very verbally abusive and angry and that's hard enough knowing suicide rate is high for bipolar rapid cyclers.my other two daughter moved out a few yrs ago and ....I'm in hell living in a house with a 22 yr old bipolar daughter and I believe a ADHD/Bipolar husband..he even make my life hell when he works out of town,where he has gotten drunk or did drugs while he had to work the next day.He has gone out all night and has come home the next morning with some lie of where he was.When he is high or manic he lurks around the house,though FBI was in the attic, or heard voices coming from the bathroom vent, thinking hes going to catch some guy in the house Its creepy.I'm 46 yrs old and don't have time for these games. He demands all my email and passwords,constantly goes though my phone,changes my voice mail password, and if I get mad he will quit his job and drive home or not deposit the check into the bank. He always seems distracted and doesn't listen very well,hince the ADHD...very messy,disorganized,forgetful,loses everything.pees on the toilet seat, doesn't clean up his messes wherever he is....couch,kitchen,bedroom exc...Oh and he has bough me jewelry over the yrs but it always ends up back in the pawn shop.i have lost things in the pawn shops over the yrs. Some birthdays,Christmas's he didn't get me anything but always tried to make up for it later with here is 100 bucks go by yourself something.One yr all stocking we stuffed but mine...not surprising..I stuffed the stockings and told him don't forget mine...but he did.he ever went to the casino Christmas morning..Every holiday he either go to the casino or fs up somehow.
Sad thing is I love the guy but can't handle the control anymore...It's enough stress having a bipolar daughter,but dealing with the manipulation,control,anger is too much.He says he has never cheated on me but has played wicked verbal games saying he has with who and in detail,then says he only does it to see if I will come out with if I have cheated...wicked mind games..
He can be very negative,like I'm walking on eggshells not knowing which one of the two evils I'm going to deal with today.So with this I hope someone else out there reads this and makes up her mind to either stick it out with the mental illness or move on....I seriously see it getting worse not better.

I'm currently in an abusive relationship that I'm literally stuck in. I'm broke, unemployed & have nowhere 2 go/turn2! Fear from retaliation and of his twin brother if I report him/call the cops on him-is why I cant bring the law into it. Last time I threatened 2 call the police he knocked out my upper teeth (5) roots included. I’m so ashamed. I was once beautiful. Now I’m 36 toothless and I look hideous. I no longer have contact with my family because of my missing teeth/Shame of my looks & Shame of reason why I’m toothless. what’s worse is having 2 go out in public and people treating me/looking down on me because people automatically assume that I’m toothless because I’m a criminal or addicted to lord knows what they have me pegged out to be on! Wow! Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. They validate the feelings I have, and reassure me that I'm not a bad person for wanting to end my relationship.
I met my partner almost 2 years ago. We lived in different cities and dated for 7 months before marrying. I saw all the bad signs and tried to push him away but he was so persistent. I have a friend who is in an abusive marriage and she warned me not to marry him, but like many women, I thought if I show him enough love he will become the ideal husband.
My abuser is also a drug abuser, but he pretended that he'd quit everything when he met me. I know now that he hasn't. Pre-marriage he only called me a bitch once, and he was drunk. At first I told him thats it, its over, but then he apologized so much I forgave him. Big mistake! He never did it again until after marriage. Just a month after marriage, he started verbal abuse. He cursed at me, my parents, my whole family.
My abuser isolated me from friends and even relatives, female relatives!! I wasn't allowed to mingle with my relative who was separated from her husband because single ladies would influence me badly. I agreed with everything he asked thinking that we'd reach a point where he'll be satisfied and we'll get along. But things only got worse.
After isolation, he started controlling what I wear. He fought with me about perfume, make up, and finally I stopped wearing these at work. Still it wasn't enough he wanted to control my finances. I got pregnant and he never felt any compassion for me. He said I was using my pregnancy, that my hormones were making me irrational. I was almost 8 months pregnant when I left him the first time.
I had to live in a shelter for about 2 weeks and then I went to stay at my brothers house (in another city) and started mat leave. At first when I left, he promised me to do everything right so I would return. But my family advised me not to. So I stayed at my brother's and called him the day I went into labor. Instead of putting our differences aside and coming to be supportive, he started abusing me when he I called him.
Finally he came to see the baby and wouldn't stop crying. I went back to him when our daughter was 2 months old. It all started again. It got even worse coz this time he didn't hide that he was smoking pot. He just kept calling me names, pushing me here and there, throwing things around etc.
I left him 3 weeks ago but not intending to leave for good. I just came to my home city to relax for 2 weeks but the mental relief I experienced being away from him just made me decide to end it. Yesterday I went to take all my things from his house, I left his key and here I am.
Its scary that I have to raise my girl alone but I know she's better off than to live with constant screaming in her ears. I have no intention of preventing him from seeing his daughter if he wants but I need some advice.
Should I be worried that he might hurt her??
For the 3.5 months that I lived there with my daughter, he was great to her. Even as I`m here, he`s constantly asking about her and asking for pictures of her. I believe he loves her and would protect her. But, can his abuse get directed at her if I let him see her?
I just want the well-being of my daughter, and I wouldn`t want to break her ties with her father. But I also need to know whether encouraging the ties would be beneficial and not harmful to my baby.

My verbally abusive husband just left me. We have been 2gether 4 2 yrs
Since the beginning he has belittled my thoughts & feelings called my every name known 2 man lived on my finances mainly complains that my attitude is the cause of all upsets n my household has only negative comments about all my friends &family has scared me on more than 1 occasion throwing fits & tearing up the home I've worked for & no end 2 the hateful things he has said 2 & about me. And somehow it is all my fault & I'm the 1 with problems. I am still foolish enough 2 miss him
It isn't foolish to miss him. You held a lot of hope for the relationship. It is difficult to admit that the hope was unfounded. Please give yourself permission to grieve.
I am a 65 year old woman who has had a very difficult life with my husband who is the same age. We have a 41 year old daughter who lives in another state and lost one, almost 20 years ago, at age 19 in an accident.
My problem seems unique, but I'm sure other women have experienced this. Years ago, I had 2 abortions where I would have had 4 children under the age of 6. I was overwhelmed caring for the 2 I had, but I thought it was mutual that we didn't have any more at that time as we were both in our mid-20's and living in an apartment at that time. He didn't object, so I went ahead with these abortions.
The problem is that he was determined to have a son, so he was very hard on our daughters as they reached their teen-age years. Even though he worked hard, as I did in raising them, he was very controlling and angry. In my mid-30's, he wanted me to try again for the son that he didn't have. I explained that I was sorry for the abortions, but that I had raised our girls who were just as valuable as sons. I was fearful to try again, not really wanting any more children, as another female child would have meant having to try for a male child.
We lost our 19 year old daughter tragically in a sudden accident when we were age 45 but he became very mean after that. Our remaining daughter moved away after college.
After that, he became very verbally abusive where he called me a murderer whenever we had a disagreement. It's been going on for years as he uses this to control me and any decisions that he wants to make. Nothing that I have done, anything positive and well-meaning, makes a difference.
He tells me that I have brought this abuse upon myself, which I probably have, but I don't think I could have coped with 4 children under the age of 6. He threw the daughter that we lost out of the house when she was 18, then refused to let her return. I have a lot of anger against him as well, but our senior years look very bleak as he's telling me to just leave if I don't give him his way.
It's a constant string of abusive anger, accusations, blame and refusal to make plans for the future as he tells me that he has no son to carry on his heritage. I've thought of leaving, but he told me that he'd throw me out of the house and change the locks if I went to a lawyer. No one knows about these abortions or about the abuse that has resulted, but I do know that I was a good mother, family member and friend who's given more than I've asked for in return.
I think there's women who are in my situation with past abortions where they bear the full responsibility for having had them even.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been married for three years, of which the last 5 months have been spent living away from my husband. He has always been a "I'm always right" person and now i often wonder why i tolerated a lot of things all those years we were dating. That said, i went into the marriage very excited about our life together and i thought he was too. We had a baby a year ago and he just went crazy after that, mainly because of his belief that my mother, who is a pediatrician, was "interfering" too much. He always has reasons for his behaviour and they were always about something external, what others said or did. Never because he may have misread something. I left the house with our baby when things came to a place when i couldn't talk to him at all. He wasn't ready to listen to reason or open to a dialogue. It was just abuse towards me and my family. I went back a few days ago to get back some stuff and since then he has suddenly "understood" everything and is ready to do anything to make this work. I would like to believe that it's true but the timing of his change of heart is suspect and reeks of desperation. It's taken me a long time (only with continued support from my friends and family) to try and forget the past and focus on constructive things. And now this guy is back with his usual cycle of trying to get me back when he feels i'm slipping away.
I believe in 'human revolution' through thoughts and actions. But i don't want to fall in a trap again. This sort of behaviour on his part has happened several times over the last one year, when he promises the world but how much can a person really change. I would like to move forward from the almost-peaceful mental state that I've been able to reach after a long long time. I thought i was done believing in his words of change but it seems i haven't. This is the most difficult decision of anyone's life and i thought i had made it four months ago. But things aren't so easy.
My biggest fear is what if i go back and the only thing that changes is my higher threshold or patience level and not his true behaviour. That is a life wasted. But i also don't wish to move forward alone and regret what-might-have-been had i got together with him. I don't know what is going to make me absolutely certain. But hopefully I'd find my way through this fork in the road :)

MD, venting works wonders, and I hope you reread your comment because it is full of wisdom. In case you didn't know already, abuse in relationships begins after a "triggering event" - something happens to cement you to the abuser - such as the birth of a child. Your husband's behavior was never about the external people in your life; it was always about controlling you. As you wrote in your comment, he is STILL trying to control you.
You know he does not accept responsibility or believe that he could be in the wrong.
You left because communication came to an end. Without communication, there can be no relationship.

There is another solution besides the two you've given yourself. Not only can you decide to leave or return, but you can also choose to OBSERVE SEPARATELY. There is nothing wrong with watching what he does from a distance. If he is truly changing, his change will be consistent, continual, honest, and occur whether or not you and his child live with him.
My opinion is that you have him figured out. You already know what will happen if you move back in; it will be harder to leave the next time. But, if you want more time, I suggest you observe him from afar and for a very long time.
Somebody was giving Kelly D advise on getting her abuser out of the house, i agree witht the thinking, Police, Restraint order, But if he is determined to get back in, the restraint order isnt going to help in itself. She has to call the police EVERYTIME he breaks it, even then they may hall him to jail for like one night, then depending on him it could just piss him off more....and civil court, if he decides to contest, which most abusers will do if they have the means, she will have to go to court...i do not know her complete situation BUt if there are kids involved the restraining order, will put the kids up for grabs for visitation during that year period. Unless he is the kind who hasnt used the threat of taking the kids to keep you at home, then that may not be a problem. Get the restraint order, request to the judge he not have contact with childrena also, if applicabe, THEN the police should come and escort his ass out, and he cannot do shit about that. Get your papers first, have him serviced by the police, then get him out. You have to call everytime their is a violation, the consequences from my experience are not severe enough to get a very entitiled person to get the point, but its the best route you have. may be the only option. Its scary, you question what will happen, its hard to do, but it has to be done....the first step is always the most difficult....he is the problem, not you and you have the right to be free of his misery. When you are ready, it will happen, and you will be better off taking that step in the right direction to get him out, hopefully for good.

For M. I just read your post, and it reminded me of the aspect i also experience, with all the many twists and turns and ups and downs living with an abuser ....
I Remember too, illness on my part was a death sentence. I would get a migraine, the kind that made you vomitt and scream in pain for mercy!! i remember the first time I was ever sick after getting married, he tolerated the vomitting but when enough was enough he kicked me when my head was in the toilet. After that i realize sickness was not an option, when i got sick, and flu season hit our house, he would blame the kids for spreading germs, namely the GIRL always gave it to the BOY!! If Mom, I ever got sick then I had until dinner time to be better, this was all before I knew I married an abuser, i remember thinking this person left me at home, with my kids in the background needing me, he left me alone because he wasnt gettin his needs met and catered too while I was sick, before I even understood what abuse was, i remember knowing in my heart this man was a beast, and not at all a husband.
Side note- Holidays with an abuser, not any I want to remember, he soiled them all, ruined them for the kids and I. Christmas was the worst. At least on Birthdays, even though he criticized everything I did for the kids, at least on Birthdays during most of them, he was gone or asleep in the bedroom. I remember he forced me NOT to celebrate my daughters second birthday. And he always accuse me of playing favorites, but that was just sowing of divisions, a tactic common to most abusive men, their way of creating some sort of conflict between siblings, and trying to destroy the Mother child bond.
And yes you cannot reason with anything they say or do. Its all about their agenda and how they can get everyone to cater to them, how they can control every aspect of your life, feelings, and emotions. When you question yourself, they have you right where they want you, confused and desperate and hopeless.
Abusers do not empathize with feelings, although they are masters of conjouring up fake ones of their own for sympathy. Across the board, they all LIE, remember for the heiness behavior to not be revealed, there is always a cover up. Abusers LIE PERIOD.

I understand the constant fluctuation between good wife then flipping over to very bad wife.
MY ex did the same things, I would hear him praise and sing me worship at church to everybody, but i soon realized this was for his own purposees, It made him feel better, and made him look like a nice guy to everyone else.
Then when the incoming abuse came I was the most disgusting, pathetic thing in his life, he would even tell my children I did not love them, he once for Mothers day gave me a gift, he leaned over looked me in the eye and called me a F#$%%^!!...C ^%$!??^##!
Then the next day I get a hand written letter obout how godly, perfect and lovely i am.....OK you get the drift!!!
Usually when somebody is crazy making you like that, creating all that chaos you have endured by his ups, and downs...we all find relief in the good moments, but beware of even the PURPOSE behind when he is setting you up.
On Meds, off meds, the reality is nobody is perfect, he sets you on this pedastool thats not even attainable, so he can knock down even a little bit further.

Your soul is not gone, you just feel empty because somebody you love or loved is in reality not worthy of recieving what you give. You just tuck it away, and keep it safe from him, the insults, insidious behavior.
I once felt so hopless, I wanted to die just to escape the fear and anxiety, toppled with all the alienation I felt around me from him spewing lies about my kids and I.
And yess, even though i would give my own life for my kids, the despair was overwhelming. But i knew I could not leave them behind alone with him.
He abused me even at night, hitting me in my sleep, pushing me out of bed, but when I would go sleep with the kids then he would get up and start in on all of us because I was not in bed with him....he would tell me how easy it was for him to bring a knife to bed and slit my throat. The filthy name calling happened day and night, and when even he would act remorsful he would joke around about it with people at church, or his work and say "ya my wife thinks i abuse her, we sleep in a double bed, who wouldnt elbow somebody now and again," he would tell me at home ya i know i did it, I know I call you whore, c---- but whenever confronted he would say "well IF i did I didnt MEAN to" or he would tell others Im sensitive, Ya i grabbed her and pushed her but its not my fault she bruised so easy. One time he even told court personel that he did not "strike me on the side of the head" he said "I only TAPPED her with finger to get her attention"
Oh, the insane stories of his insane behavior I have. Even though i physically left him within the first two years, he continued abusing me VIA my children, and Stalking and threatening us for TEN years, and going.
So I just wanted to share a little with you, whatever you may be facing, you are not alone and my family for one, REALLY understand how desperate abuse can make life feel.
Otherwise, longterm, meaning we want to end abuse in the family, spousal abuse, directly because it directly affect children involved. We want to support women with patience, love and above all empathy and understanding. The only long term plan to do that is to be informed about abuse, spread the word so people who reach out do not feel like this is only happening to them, share with them experiences, share with them knowledge about the issue they are dealing with, which is the issue of living with an abusive spouse, not a mentally ill out of control person who cannot help themselves from spewing their venom on you and your children. But hey if you want to offer a free evaluation to the millions of women and children who suffer daily at the hands of their partners? Slap a label on an abusive person, they will love that, just another tool to control, and not be held responsible for anything. Go to church they will call it SIN,you should pray for him, be a better wife blah, blaah, blah Go to court they will assume the kids wont suffer anymore once the parents split, we all know who have been their that is not true, it only leaves them more vulnerable to his abuse because their one protective parent wont be there, and also abuse escalates when you try to leave it so the kids are at even higher risk.
Do a mental evaluation on them, if they chose they will pass with flying colors...especially if it serves them well. Do a mental evaluation on an abused women she may not pass, due to the stress of the abuse she has endured.

I was reading through some of the top comments by a lady name Gina. To try to say that abusers are mentally ill, is only clouding and adding more greay to this subject. i know many women who spend countless amounts of time, with trying to figure out if their abusive spoue is mentally ill. Yes, any answer when your being abused daily, and feeling desperate and trapped is what most will strive for. We think that to spot him in a illness, will open the door to all our questions to all the endless mazes, and puzzzling behavior will save us. Unfortunately not true. Just like many people have ANGER issues, the most common solution thrown into an abuse situation, Then the women spends countless hours trying to make things better for him so as NOT to anger him. The truth is abusers have no problem with their anger, they do however have a problem with YOU having a problem with their anger.
In the short, lets stick to the straight and narrow. Abusers have a certain mindset, NOT mental illness, they fell eintitled to how they treat their victoms, they benefit from it, they get support through courts and churches. They are highly skilled spin doctors, highly manipulative, they blameshift, they financial control and abuse their familys, they make veiled threats physically and verbally, when you get them out of the house do to being fearful and threatened by them, they ressort to a smear campaign against YOU, they use their own children as weapons to control and threaten you. They cry, look pitigul, and sad....people feel sorry for them, those people encourage you to stay BECAUSE he is sorry after all!!! Yet those same people do an about face when your children suffer from his behavior, the same people who support him in his time of need, blame you if your kids are hurt by him....
Thousands, millions of women and children experience the exact same horror stories from abusive spouses. They do not need to waste time trying to figure out his problem, read the the cycle of abuse and control. Read thousands of storys of women and their children that are re victomized by churches, and the court system when trying to leave abuse. Understand that children are at high risk when divorce is iminent, UNDERSTAND the dynamics of ABUSE, and understand the MENTALITY involved in abusers BEFORE you confuse people by telling them your expertise on mental illness. Yes some abusers may be mentally ill, may be alcohalics, but not all mentally ill eople or alcohalics abuse their wives and children. Likewise, not all angry people abuse their wives and children BUT abusers use anger as a form of intimidation and control, and yes they are moody short fused people BUT if anybody else is looking they can snap right out of it.
I know Gina is trying to be informative, but unless she has lived it or say like Lundy Bancroft REALLY understands its dynamics, she is doing more harm than good. So again lets not cloud the waters with more mirk. Otherwise long term abusers will NEVER become accountable for ANYHTING they do. Study up sister!

Gloria, if you see this - you say 'He wants someone skinny, I am not.' Realise that if you were skinny, he would want someone fat. It's not the content of his wishes, it's the fact that you can't fulfil them... took me a VERY long time to realise this.
The insidious building-up of disrespect was how I got caught up in it. It hurts my pride to say I am an abuse victim. Might be easier to confess alcoholism. I'm relieved to see men commenting here without shame - we can all grow through this learning process, dreadful though it is, to the point of knowing our self-esteem need not depend on others' assumptions.
I'm in the process of divorce after 23 years which is more than half my life. In fact I haven't been single, as an adult, more than 3 weeks in a row. It is terrifying! Even more because I now have chronic illness - various hard-to-describe and hard-to-diagnose conditions which together are disabling. I have no family to support me (even moral support, since my mother died unexpectedly last year) and cannot work. My only useful skill is loads of experience at weasling what I need out of the unhelpful medical and government System... ;)
Kellie, I'm sure you will say my health difficulties are (at least partly) caused by the long-term abuse and I agree with you! It is frustrating that I can't 'openly' blame him but it does give me hope that I will perhaps become more able once we're apart. Another reason I'm terrified of divorcing is that I stand a good chance of losing the funding for my disability care (this is not UK divorce law, but disability law; someone please change our government whose approach is very like my soon-to-be-ex husband's = bully only those who won't fight too hard!).
I've come to the conclusion that we are two separate 'species' as it were. There are 'elephant' humans like myself who automatically give support if someone is ill, weak, old, or whatever. Then there are 'wolf' humans who turn on those who can't keep up. Yes, he is only nasty behind closed doors, but more than that I have observed that he is worse when I'm physically or emotionally weaker (so now, much of my energy goes into hiding that from him) - and worse towards the weakest person present. When I am acting strong, he is horrible to our youngest. I think that's the key to why he's perfectly pleasant when witnesses are around, they have power over him. The needier I am, the worse he treats me, to the point of regularly refusing to reach a blanket (didn't even require standing up) when I was chilled to the bone and unable to stand up to get it myself.
Seeing that is like a loss of innocence and I mourn it. I used to believe that no one is truly bad on the inside, only misguided or unheard or similar. I used to think if I could make him understand how it affected me, he'd willingly change. But this knowledge is strength: the more he sees the effect, the more he does it. So that effort is one I dropped!
I used to think it was my self-centredness that made me so deeply mind being ignored. My personal learning curve has involved forgiving my own faults rather than trying to eradicate them - remembering we all have faults and I'd overlook most of mine if they were in someone else.
That was the second of two steps that got me to the point of being able to leave. I think you write about it in another post, Kellie? giving up the striving to be faultless. It really helped when I found rage as a symptom of BEING abused - I saw that I'm not (as he says I am) the perpetrator. The first step was recognising it as abuse - when I found a 'checklist' and it described his behaviour as if the writer had been spying on him! I was in shock for 6 weeks, and then able to gird my loins and plan to do what I hadn't been able to justify up to then: leave.
Took another 2 years to get well enough to take on Social Services for the support I need nowadays to be able to cope with a 'paperwork project' as demanding as divorce (with him refusing to contact them, preferring to 'help' me and whine that it was too much for him to cope with - telling me I'd lose my benefits if 'they' found out the 'truth' about how fit I actually was...) - and then wait for that support to be in place. I feel like a hostage escaping from years of solitary confinement. (Still feel presumptuous comparing my situation to people with 'real' hardship...!) You see why I am scared of being without the funding for that support. I'd be without cooking, laundry, transport, or the means to pay for any of it, and I'd screw up my finances within a few weeks.
And STILL better off than living with him. My only regret, honestly, is staying so long, letting our sons have him such a big part of their upbringing. :(

I have been married to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for 31 years. He is the most charismatic, charming, romantic man in the world, but he can become the most viscious, cruel, evil monster I have ever seen. He either adores me and acts like I walk on water and have always been the woman of his dreams, or he hates me, holds me in utter contempt, finds me utterly worthless and disgusting and can't wait to get rid of me. He will talk for hours about some situation he wants to plan for and will seek my cooperation with, then when I work toward those mutual goals we discussed, he will turn on me and use that very thing as an indictment against me. Mr. Hyde claims to have never said or felt the things Dr. Jekyll has communicated to me. So my life has always been like living with two men who are each other's mortal enemies. He has been on medication for 6 years which has helped a great deal, but he is constantly skipping doses, or cutting them in half, etc. and then he goes to crazy town again. He has rescinded his admission of being ill so many times I have lost count. He admitted it, apologized profusely, acted remorseful, got help, kept taking the medications...but then he goes off them and insists he is fine and I am crazy. He does that over and over and over. He is very good at sounding so pitiful and will play the victim and cry the blues about always being perceived as the bad guy. He is very highly intelligent and is extremely good at emotional and mental manipulation. I am just exhausted from a lifetime of mental, emotional, spiritual abuse. It is to the point it has taken a real toll on my physical health and I am so worn out and just long for peace, calm, and tranquility!!
Thank you for this blog!! I was in a verbally abusive marriage for a long time. I was married for 31 years but the abuse didn't begin until he stopped drinking. His Dr. suggested AA & antidepressants but he chose to fight his alcoholism alone. He chose me as his next addiction, he become obsessed with my activities. He frequently counted my medication, called my Dr to see if I showed up at my appointments and controlled my spending & life. I do have Bipolar which he pointed to as the source of marital problems, but, the alcoholism was much more insidious. Unfortunately because my husband was the love of my life I tolerated his behavior & control over me. I decided I needed to live without him so I could survive as a person. I needed to be able to look in the mirror & see a reflection of the confident women I once was.
After 3 temporary restraining orders, I was denied a permanent restraining order by a male judge because there was no physical abuse. I was forced to live in my car which of course people blamed on my Bipolar rather than my abusive relationship. women need to stand together in support of each other so we can thrive as independent human beings.
Kay Dee wrote on 7th July that her abuser lives with her. I have the same situation. It is the first time I have ever seen this situation addressed, as almost all the abuse advice talk about leaving the abuser. How are you supposed to leave, leaving him in your home. That is why she spoke about selling her house. Difficult to sell when your homehas been damamged and you don't want to let anyone in. The feeling of stuckness is unimaginable if you have not experienced it.
Hi Gloria, I just left my verbally abusive husband after 32 years of marriage. Do IT! He does not deserve to "play husband' to you. He's the joke and you give the punch line by walking out. Better late than never is my new motto!
I am 59 years old and have been in a verbally abusive marriage for almost 38 years. It wasn't WHAM all at once, it has escalated over the years with some times of peace, but mostly verbal abuse. My husband is 65 years old and he is the exact image of the man he said he hated and never wanted to be like - his father.
His father physically and verbally abused his mother throughout their entire marriage up until his death in 2000 at age 86. It was so sad, and now, here I am ready to turn 60 in January finding myself slipping away down the slope of becoming my mother in law.
I am an average built woman - not thin, not heavy either. In 2010 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and because of some complications after my surgery I ended back in the hospital for over a week with an NG tube inserted into my intestines and no food except for the IV nutrients fed to me in the hospital. Between my surgery and that episode, I lost almost 30 pounds - I was really, really thin. My husband was elated. He said it felt so good to hug me and feel bones and that if anything I should be happy I had all that happen to me because it made me "look and feel human again to him".
This struggle with his perception of me has been a constant subject for his verbal abuse. He wants someone skinny, I am not. I am 5'10" and wear a size 12 pant and dress. All he does, is complain about how I look and how he deserves better. Today, we were driving in the car and he started on how much he is disgusted with me and that I turn his stomach to look at me. He ranted and cursed and called me so many names unleashing his anger for about 30 minutes, while I was stuck in the car with no where to go.
I work full time and he has just retired and he resents the fact that he feels the need to help out around the house. He brings it up to me every day saying that I am a lazy bitch who is using the fact that I just finished chemo a little over a year ago as an excuse to not having enough energy to do all the things I used to.
I don't need him financially and since being diagnosed with cancer, I have changed my outlook on life and what is important. The stress he causes me every day, and mind you the weight issues is just one of the things he abuses me about, but it is the most prevalent, is not good for me and I don't want to live like this anymore.
He has actually told me twice in the last month and today also that I will need to lose 30 pounds in order for him to think about wanting to be married to me any longer. Although I carry about 10-12 extra pounds, his goal for me will never happen and I told him so. I told him that I would not be able to meet his goal for me and that a marriage based on such shallow expectations is not normal. His reply was, "then there's nothing more to say. Until I move out, you go your way, and I'll go mine. I deserve someone who is willing to look the way I feel a woman should look and that I deserve, because I despise you."
He is always leaving - that is/was his threat to me all our marriage. It used to scare me especially when I was home raising our son, but now I just said that it was sad that our marriage has come to this, but that I would rather live along than with someone who despises me.
I do not want to leave my home, I've lived here for 28 years. I am hoping he finally does leave, but I doubt it, so I will have to start making plans to move out and begin a new chapter in my life. All I know, is that for whatever amount of time I have left on this earth, I need it to be peaceful without all this drama and stress.
So my advise to someone in the beginning of such a relationship is to end it now because you will never be able to change them and they will never change.
Great advice, Gloria. I am sorry you were stuck with it for all these years. Do you think the cancer had anything to do with the stress you've been under? I can't help but make the connection between his complaints about your body and the most "feminine" of all organs, the ovaries.
You will be much happier when you've left and realize all the peace you can create for yourself. Congratulations on your decision!

Now this sounds so familiar.
Mine is VERY entrenched in her abuse, lies and fabrications. She plays "Ms. Perfect." Super sweet in public, but wait till the door is closed. She was sweet until the wedding. But it was 2 late, I was stuck as I now had a 3 year old girl calling me Daddy! I tolerated it for the kid. (I remember one day she was angry, she tossed a table knife at me, it hit me in the back of the hand. Next I heard the girl yelling!! Blood was squirting onto her food).
3 more kids. I just cared for them and sluffed off her stupidity. The oldest at 16 got run down by her own abuser, but I had no support form my so called wife. So he took that girl.
After 23 years, and me not responding to her crap, she discovered the internet and moved out. I breathed a sigh of relief. NO that was the beginning of WORSE. Cop cars and the like - She did things to those kids!! But It ended within a month. The kids were with me. (Mom had her sex life computer and didn't cook.) Youngest was my little girl, 9. She was happy with Dad, no games etc. Youngest son never bought his mom's garbage, so she decided his 19th birthday was a nice day for moving out! He was hurt and confused and in 2 months his ABUSER locked in her teeth. Took her 6 weeks to get pregnant and she appealed to his character (just like Dad).
My wife filed for divorce. And I took a strong line, and won for a year! I got custody of the daughter. Well until that day when the court says kid can say. Ex sent cop cars, abuse complaints, etc. It went on. She hurt the kid. The threats and STUPID acts!! Cops every time she mentioned or saw Dad!!
That was 2001. 2003 she kept with counceling the officials! (The key plan is to say all these things, and just when the victim steps on something close or familiar to the story, arrest.)
It came to a head in last 6 months. My father passed and she comes to the funeral with her daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Proceeded to keep three children from speaking to Dad or Grandma at the funeral.
Then this spring, her mother passed away. Mom wanted to be there. And I had never fought with the mother-in-law. So we went. Son in law called the cops, but they weren't buying it. he showed as ABUSIVE. So he was guarding the daughters, and as we drove up he yelled from the Church steps at Mom and I "FU AH"s"!! I made a discovery on the abuse there. Her family? Well They hugged me shook my hand and were so glad I came!!
Her games were carefully hidden!!
Now I need help on how to bust the cycle!

I am comforted knowing I was not alone in an abusive relationship. Throughout the 20 years together, I asked for a divorce, tried to leave and apparantly pushed him away. I truly loved him very much and still often think of him although we have been divorced almost 5 years. I found myself a mess/broken when HE decided it was over and found himself a bisexual female with no scruples. They married after the divorce and are still together... and from what my kids say, he has not changed. He is still the same, just changed partners.
I can say that I had convinced myself to stay in the relationship as I realized how much I loved him (even though I wasn't treated well) and we had a family and a wonderful home, etc. It is just very sad that this happened and is such a loss in so many ways. Too bad more abusers don't get help and figure out how to behave in a healthy relationship, so many people would have been spared much pain. Especially the kids.
I met my ex when I was 16. On our first date, we went out for dinner and when the bill came, I reached in my wallet to help with the tip. At first, he smiled and said, "No - let me take care of this." I was used to going Dutch at that age and wanted to contribute so I pushed my money back and said "Let me at least pay the tip." That's when he gripped my fingers together tightly and gritted his teeth and said "NO! I said I've got it!" I must've pouted as I retracted and put my money away. I just didn't know what to think. He could see my feelings had been hurt, then apologized and was almost overly-attentive. I somehow interpreted his aggression as 'mature' and/or 'authoritative'.
Looking back, from nearly Day 1, the relationship was a power struggle and I was always feeling like I'd done something to 'start things' when we had a disagreement. By the time I left in 1999 (I was 37), I just couldn't take another day of being called a 'Dumb bitch', 'Stupid C**t' or a bunch of other choice words. I had tried leaving earlier too, but was told "Who's going to want you? You're fat, you don't have a great job, drive a shitty little car and have two small children. Besides, you were never that good looking to begin with."
I lost almost 50 pounds after that comment and he took credit for my determination to lose the weight! Once I'd lost the weight, I set out to find a new job/career and he tried to sabotage my interviews (the initial screenings were done over the phone) by picking up the other extension and telling me to get the F off the phone. Fortunately, I got the job anyway and after about a year, I told him a wanted a divorce.
Even though my life is so much better now, I've lost my kids due to the continued fighting after the divorce. I can't seem to let go of the hurt or the fact that he still has the ability to hurt me by using the kids against me.
I to am a male that has been abused by my wife we have been married for 33 years and the abuse stems back over decades. I finally had enough and left my wife about a month ago. I was called crazy in the head not to mention the nasty name calling being bipolar 1 this really raised such bad feelings toward myself I actually began to believe the abuse was true. Since leaving I have felt better and just realized how sick the relation was. My wife has approached me and would like to get back together and I said NO. Not until she gets therapy. The hardest part of this whole ordeal is being a male and admitting that I was abused. But, I now realize that I am not the only one. My two daughters support me 100% which is a great feeling as they support my leaving.
Dear Clint, it is wonderful that you've taken the big step and removed yourself from her presence! Good for you! The trick to it now is remembering how tricky SHE can be. Therapy is no guarantee - she may say she's going and not go, she may pretend to be changing and not change... Give yourself a LOT of time to decide if any positive changes are real before going back "home". You may find that the new home you create for yourself is so much nicer than anything you've shared with your wife that even if she does complete a 100% turn-around, too much damage has already been done.
I encourage you to go to therapy alone, no couples therapy, no matter what your wife decides to do. The one-on-one support, understanding, and education you'll receive at therapy is worth the world. Make sure you find a therapist familiar with domestic abuse!

I don't know where to start! I live with my boyfriend-well he lives with me. I've finally realized after a long time that he has been verbally and emotionally abusing me. I'm done waiting and hoping for him to change and I'm ready to end the relationship, but he won't leave! He's called me every name in the book, accused me of everything you can imagine,and blames me for all of his problems including him getting fired from his last job(FOR NOT GOING TO WORK!),for having an awful baby's mom(I didn't sleep with her, he did!),and the list goes on and on. He's manipulative, plays victim all the time, irresponsible, self-centered, jealous, passive-aggressive, etc. I can't get a word in edgewise to try to defend myself, or try to talk sense into him. I know I'm not crazy, but his words get into my head and I end up feeling depressed, discouraged, and alone. I can't tell my parents or close friends, they would be disappointed in me for staying with this loser as long as I have.I feel like I'm going to have a nervous breakdown or a stroke from the stress of having to deal with him! I don't know what else to do but to sell my house just to get away from him. I'm not interested in stopping the behavior, I NEED to end the relationship!
Kay Dee, ask him to leave. If he won't leave, call the police and ask them to remove him. It's your house. He doesn't belong there. If the police won't take him without a restraining order, do what you need to do to get the order. Then they'll make him leave. Good luck - this is all on you. You have to make the choice and the decision to put him out. He certainly isn't going to choose to leave.

I've been divorced from my abuser since 1979. He abducted my children and took them to his family in Guam who have the means and power to keep them. I didn't have the money or support to fight after a couple of years. Plus I didn't want my kids to go through any more. Sometimes a mom has to do unconventional things to protect her children. And there was an unspoken threat that if I fought harder I wouldn't see them again. My kids are grown now and both live near me. We still have to work at our relationship from time-to-time but it's okay. That is except for my daughter-in-law whom he has charmed, and she's not that crazy about me. He's always the charmer in public; vile behind closed doors. Just recently, he and his wife moved here from Guam and are living with my son until they can get settled. I'm pretty upset they are here. A few weeks ago, I was at a party for my granddaughter. It's the first time I'd been around him since my daughter's wedding five years go. (I don't go anywhere he is unless I have to.) I always think I'm going to be fine, but watching him be charming and then just hearing his voice made my hands shake and cold chills ran down my back. I had to work at controlling my fear. Can you imagine still being terrified after such a long time? I have a wonderful therapist and we've been working on strengthening my tools to help with the flashbacks. She is also helping me compose a letter to my daughter-in-law. Face-to-face won't happen. Some of the phrases in your article are very helpful to use. I almost didn't read this. Even reading it brought up the fear. But, it's good. It's all good. Thanks for this.

Thank you Kelly for sharing your story. I heard the same things from my abuser, a former boyfriend. Isn't that something, that they somehow 'can't seem to stop' abusing us, yet they don't abuse the world at large. Even many disordered abusers have a sense of right and wrong and abuse us because they can, as one person posted.
My abuser claimed I brought on myself, the name-calling and abuse, although he never used the term 'abuse.' By saying 'no' to him I was 'responsible' for inciting the behavior. In classic abuser style, he would viciously and verbally attack me (as no one ever has) then later apologize. It's gone on for more than a year. I have terminated communication. He persisted in calling me, although he was involved with another woman who he began seeing while I was still in the picture.
Because I refused to have a sexual relationship with him (until marriage), he called me 'dysfunctional,' 'sexually dysfunctional,''old maid,' 'immature,''ice cold,'suffering from 'arrested development,' 'incapable of ever having a romantic relationship.'
Sometimes he would say other vile things and when I would protest, he would tell me to 'lighten up.' The relationship began online and the second time I saw him, when I flew cross-country to his state, he abused me sporadically for 4 days, screaming at me as to why I wouldn't have sex with him or allow him to fondle me.
The night before I was to fly out, he sexually assaulted me. It doesn't matter that I was fully clothed. I cried out for him to stop, but he didn't. He later related the story to his friends who agreed with him that I was 'dysfunctional' and that his fondling was indeed 'no big deal.'
When I got off of him and ran to grab my things from his room (it took about 60 seconds to flee his house) where I was staying (he slept in the living room), he screamed at me calling me the b and c words and spewing other vile filth. His 17 year old son was upstairs but never heard anything.
I fled his house, on a Sunday night at 11:15 pm, in a strange city, several states away from home, not knowing another soul, until I banged on a door and pleaded for help in calling a cab. I honestly thought he would finish the job and rape me that night had I not left. They, thankfully, summoned police who drove me to the airport where I waited until my flight left at 1 pm the next day. The police wanted to find him but I was afraid and did not identify him. He is a brilliant attorney and I feared he would turn things around on me.
He texted me repeatedly saying what I had 'done'(leaving) was outrageous and inconsiderate to him. He continued insulting me, threatened me if I went public on the dating website where we met.
For 1.5 weeks, he demanded I contact him. The night before, I had witnessed his brutal beating - at his own hand. He slapped his face as hard as he could, beat his back, chest, punched his head, etc. He seriously injured himself (concussion, bruised rib, injured cornea) and persisted in verbally attacking me, that is, saying I was to blame.
Hours before I fled his house, we cooked dinner as his family and a friend were coming over to meet me. He kept insulting, taunting me because I refused him sexually. As I chopped onion with a butcher knife, he put his hand over mine holding the knife and stared coldly at me without blinking while he tried to stab himself! If I had let go, he would have been stabbed with me holding the knife. His children were behind him and never saw. Again, he blamed all on me. 'I forced him into a crazy state.' He accused me of being mentally ill.
I have emails, text messages with him telling me I need help, that I am delusional and pathetic. Some of this refers to me not having a full-time job since I was laid off a few years ago. With help from a mental health professional, I have determined this man is likely a borderline personality disorder.
He has recently emailed saying he wants to die and very threateningly said 'Don't you dare call the cops for a welfare check! That's you being passive-aggressive under the guise of helping!' He has repeatedly apologized and just as many times, has repeated this patten of insults. I pray for him but never want to see him again. I no longer fear him and feel very strong because of this experience.
Thank you Kelly for continuing to share your story to help others. Although I know I did nothing to prompt his behavior, I feel vindicated and empowered when I read your stories and those of others.

Diana, I don't know what to say. For crying out loud - he was willing to seriously injure himself to make you out to be the abuser?! You must be the most powerful woman on earth to so efficiently "force him into a crazy state." ;)
Back in the day, when I'd hear nonsense like that, I'd wonder why, if I was so powerful that I could "make" him crazy, then why in the world didn't my efforts to make him HAPPY work?
I am glad you're no longer with this monster. I wonder if his kids are biding their time until they can escape, too.
I think you bring up some good points but I don't quite agree with everything in your article. My brother verbally abuses me and he's done none of the things you have listed in this article. You are describing specific events as opposed to characteristics of an abuser. Not all abusers say and do exactly the same things. The abuse my brother dishes out at me is more vague. (ie: interrupting me to tell me that he knows what I'm going to say, turning up the TV loud enough for the floor to shake as a way to get me to stop talking, always having to prove that I'm wrong, etc.) Those aren't characteristics of an abuser. Those things are specific to my story. On the other hand, narcissism, intense anger/vengeance, and a lack of responsibility (for his or her actions) are just a few common characteristics of abusers. My point is that the things you listed are specific to your story. Its horrible that you were treated that way. No one deserves that kind of treatment. However, you can't generalize specific events from your story as if all abusers say and do those same things things. Every person is different therefore every abuser is different.
The list is designed as an example of what abusers say and do, accumulated from my experiences and those of other women and men who have written to me. Each situation is going to be different; the idea behind the list is to mention many examples so readers can see if something their partner says/does can be accurately called abuse. The very first paragraph states, "The tone and content varies from abuser to abuser, but the words effect the victim in similar ways" and the fourth states, "This list is only a partial list of the things verbal abusers say. It's not limited to my own abusive relationship. It takes into account what other's have reported hearing, too."
Narcissism is not a necessary characteristic of an abuser, nor is intense anger. Many abusers may show the personality traits of a narcissist, but as most will not go to a psychologist/psychiatrist, they remain undiagnosed for personality disorders or maladaptive traits. Many abusers never display intense anger but do their damage through passive-agressive tactics.
I will agree that abusers do not authentically take responsibility for their actions although, during the honeymoon phase, they may pretend to do so. Does your brother ever treat you well? Do you have a honeymoon period? I'm curious to know what that period is like between siblings.
My parents are both verbal abusers and neglectful. I tried to confront them but they only became more angry when I did. They accused me of being mentally ill because I began to act angrily and uncooperatively with them. This article and the other one with Dr. Rhoades are the closest I have ever come to describing the sad and frustrating time I have had trying to understand my parents' behaviors. I continue to have the most minimum of contact with them but I discovered that my mother has been secretly meeting with my children and giving them money. They are both young adults. Any suggestions?
Money is a difficult temptation to ignore for anyone, and your parents know this. Your children are going to make up their own minds, and frankly, your parents may never, ever treat their grandchildren the way they treated you. Your children, being adults, can stand to hear about your experience with your parents. Feel free to tell them what you went through. Tell them the truth of what you feel, but the tone of the conversation and the last words should be something like, "I don't want any contact with my parents, but you are old enough to make your own decisions. I worry that you will suffer the same pain I did, and I don't want that for you. But i love you no matter what you decide."
And then you have to let it go.
IF problems arise between you and your children due to their involvement with your parents, you must deal with them head on and as quickly as possible. Have faith that your kids know who you are. They've known you longer and love you more than anyone else in this world. Communicate lovingly or else you'll create a wedge that drives them closer to the ones who hurt you.
I'm with Kellie. It's a choice. I have certainly told my wife enough times that I don't like being called names, ordered around, being made the butt of her jokes, and her making back handed insults about southerners (I am one) or Texas (I was born there and lived there a very long time) or that "men are pigs" etc. Even if she was a moron, she should have gotten it by now that I don't like it and could change IF she wanted to.
I know it's ingrained in now for more than 50 years, but if she had any care or empathy for my feelings she would stop.
My then husband always wanted to be the victim....then everyone would feel sorry for him and give him lots of pity. He has the look of a sorrowful person....It is (was) pretty calculated....He came from a home where his two siblings got positive and negative attention....and he was quiet and basically got ignored. He was "forced" to marry me because our religions were the same...But he was pretty furious, yet covered it well. After he had filed for divorce 40 years later. . . he told me the truth. It made a sham out of what I thought was a sincere marriage.
I have lived with a verbal abuser for 35 years and yes he came from an
abusive home. At one point he was diagnosed with ADHD, but as we came
to find out it was actually PTSD not ADHD. You will find that many children
from abusive situations actually suffer from PTSD but have been incorrectly
diagnosed. I have come to the realization that my verbal abuser does not
verbally abuse everyone at large so he has some control over the issue. He verbally
Abuses me because he can. I know I can't help him, live him enough to cure
him, I can only help me. I am seeking an EMDR therapist to help me with the
Trauma I have suffered and am making plans to leave him. Only he can make
himself stop. Statistics I've heard suggests that 95% of verbal abusers will never
change. Don't waste your lives like I have
Margaret, you make an excellent point: Abusers do not abuse the "world at large". They choose carefully who to abuse. Like you say, "So they have some control over the issue."
And if they can control who they abuse, then that means they CHOOSE to abuse. It is a choice that most could change, if they wanted. It just works so well for them, they don't want to change.

Thank you so much for reaching out and sharing your story. Just knowing that there are others out there that can identify with what I went through and that there is help to recover is a relief.
I am so grateful that I finally got the courage to leave that beast. I grew up in a household where verbal abuse was common, and I swore I would never subject myself to that cycle of insanity again in life. Yet there I was in the same cycle of verbal abuse and the more I tried to leave the more he would try and convince me that he would get help and stop.
He would even make attempts to get help and when I would come back it would start all over again. It is truly a sickness a mental condition and needs to be treated by a professional. Anyone who has experienced the trauma should also seek help to heal and recover.
I am bi-polar, & my boyfriend has adult A.A.D. I realize that I am certainly no picnic to live with. But neither is his A.A.D.It has a lot of similarities, to being bi-polar!! I don't know witch is worse!!

Reading through your comments has been such a relief to me because I think my husband suffers from an adult form of ADD and obsessive compulsive disorder and I honestly dont think he has any idea of his abusive nature (most of his family have some type of mental issues as well). This in no way as far as I'm concerned makes his treatment of me any more exusable or right with his constant cruel behaviour. I guess what you have both said confirms many things for me and I am now getting some professional help to learn how to cope with this behaviour....and detach from this. I find that I buy into his abuse so often and the fights that ensure are not pleasant and I am left feeling hurt and angry while he waltzes around in his own little world of denial..his whole family do exactly the same and I honestly think that he doesnt know what he is doing as it is such a normal behaviour pattern for them...and this in no way diminishes his behaviour either..thank you for your article...gaeline
My husband is a text-book classic abuser. Though the abuse has never escalated to anything physical (with the exception of withholding intimacy which in my book is a physical manifestation of his abuse), he has threatened physical violence on at least six occasions. When the verbal abuse first started all it did was confuse me. It all seemed so counter to the man I thought I knew. Then I progressed through the steps that others have gone through; the self examination and self blame, the reasoning,, crying, etc. Eventually it was clear that nothing would change. I am still in the relationship but have mostly detached and have been making steps to leave the relationship entirely. it has been the worst relationship with any human being that I have ever encountered. I am certain that he is mentally ill. My degree in Psychology, though, did not prepare me for him. Living through the symptoms backlash has been a nightmare. I have never even experienced the so-called "honeymoon" phase that some people have when the abuser tries to regain control over the victim. In other words, the abuse has just been ongoing for over a decade. Why am I still with him? Very deeply entrenched aversion to breaking vows. But as I said, I am getting my ducks in a row to make my exodus. Writing this isn't totally cathartic, of course, but it helps. Thanks for the blog.
