It's Mental Illness Awareness Week
Well sorta. NAMI still supports Mental Illness Awareness Week. The federal government stopped officially recognizing it several years ago. One thing that caught my attention though are the initials of Mental Illness Awareness, M.I.A. In military speak, it stands for soldiers who are not accounted for as dead or alive and are put in a sort of no-man's land, "missing in action."
Working for HealthyPlace, the largest consumer mental health site, gives me a somewhat unique perspective. We touch the lives of more than 1 million people a month. From emails and comments left on the site, I can tell you there are many people with mental health problems who are missing in action. Maybe you are one of them?
There are people with Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, and Dissociative Identity Disorder who want to remain anonymous. We have people who are abuse victims and who self-injure who hide their scars and want to blend in. And there are those with psychotic illnesses like untreated Schizophrenia who are lining the streets and alleys, neglected and alone.
All are out there "missing in action."
