Opening Up About Postpartum Psychosis

Jennifer Moyer, Bipolar with psychotic features
My name: Jennfer Moyer
Age: 45
Diagnosis: Bipolar Disorder with Psychotic Features
Symptoms since: 1996

Back in 2001, as a result of the Andrea Yates case, I was contacted by a writer for a national magazine. The magazine wanted to publish a positive story of someone who experienced postpartum psychosis (the same condition Andrea Yates experienced). I was selected and the story was published in 2002. The reason I agreed to do the story is so I could help increase awareness of mental health related to childbearing and to help others who experienced similar situations.

The effect of being public was very difficult on my family and I as many had not known of my experience. But despite the difficulties, it was one of the best things I have done. I am aware of other mothers that were directly helped by reading my story. If I was able to help even one person, then speaking openly about my story was worth it. Thankfully, I was able to reach more than I could have imagined. I now am comfortable being open about my story and continue to strive to help others.

The Impact of Disclosing Postpartum Psychosis

My experience has shaped me in a positive way. Although during the difficulties it seemed things would never get better and I was overwhelmed with shame and guilt, I now feel my experience has made me stronger and more compassionate. For years, I struggled after the onset of postpartum psychosis. It took over seven years to receive the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, postpartum onset.

I would encourage others to come out about their experiences because the more mental health issues are talked about, the better understanding, the better the treatment and the better prevention will be addressed.
