Are You Ready to Deal with Binge Eating Disorder?

Are you ready to deal with binge eating disorder (BED)? You're learning more about it, and you have the symptoms of BED, but are you ready to deal with BED? When you have an eating disorder, coming to terms with the very fact it exists can be extremely difficult. You can be fully aware you have a problem but be unprepared for taking steps to deal with it in a practical way. You may not be ready to deal with binge eating disorder.

When I Was Ready to Deal with Binge Eating Disorder

It took me a while to realize my behavior was not average and even longer to realize I
needed to deal with my binge eating disorder. The first step toward my binge eating disorder being diagnosed was admitting to myself that my binging and was causing me a great deal of distress and my weight was impacting my quality of life.

At one point, someone in my life tried to force me into treatment and badgered me about my weight until I cried, but I couldn't do it. I wasn't ready. Admitting something was wrong with me was terrifying and I just couldn't deal with binge eating disorder at that point.

When I Was Ready to Start Dealing with Binge Eating Disorder

I had to realize that not only did I have a problem, but I needed to do something about it. At the time, I thought my problem was weight gain and the solution to that would simply be to lose weight.

I knew my binging had an emotional component, though, so I went to an eating disorder therapist to figure out what was going on. While I was there, she diagnosed me with binge eating disorder, something that was both expected and unexpected. Expected because I knew what was going on with my eating was not everyday, but unexpected because I didn't think things were that bad.

How to Prepare Yourself to Deal with Binge Eating Disorder

Dealing with binge eating disorder can be a very difficult task. Dealing with the fact you have a mental health problem can be daunting. Seeking help for it can be even more difficult. But this doesn't mean that it's impossible.

The first step is often reaching out to a doctor and explaining what's going on in your life and why you have concerns (Eating Disorder Help: Where to Get Help for Eating Disorders). Remember that a diagnosis is not a death sentence, which sometimes it can feel like. Most importantly, remember that once you're in care, you can get help and work on your eating disorder recovery. Which means you can learn how to identify your triggers, find coping skills, and stop feeling so out of control.

No one can tell you when you're ready to deal with binge eating disorder. This is a decision you have to make on your own. Just remember that there is help available in many different forms and you don't have to keep feeling the way you're feeling and experiencing all of the binge eating disorder symptoms.
