When Is the Right Time to Share Your Eating Disorder Story?

March 24, 2021 Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

Is there a right time to share your eating disorder story? And if so, when do you know the time is right? I have been thinking about these questions lately with regard to my own eating disorder story. A few months ago, I heard vulnerability researcher Brené Brown state in a podcast interview, "If there is a part of my story that I feel compelled to seek external validation for, then I am not ready to talk about it publicly."

Those words struck a powerful chord in me because I have felt an urge on certain occasions to disclose my own experience for self-indulgent reasons, but now that I'm in a stable recovery place, I understand the importance of first examining my personal motives. Do you also want to be intentional in choosing when to share your eating disorder story? In the video below, I will talk about what helps me determine whether or not the time is right.
