How Does Depression Feel To You?

HealthyPlace Mental Health Newsletter

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

How Does Depression Feel To You?

For many, it's hard to understand major depression. Phrases like "feeling sad" or "feeling blue", even "feeling hopeless", don't really capture the emotional pain of depression. HealthyPlace Facebook member, KW Vidad, shares how depression feels:

"Depression feels like being buried six feet under and you're screaming so loud, but no one seems to hear you. This is how depression feels. It's like you're screaming helplessly on the inside."

Braden Daniels describes it this way:

"The feeling of depression is like being paralyzed by sadness. Physically and emotionally paralyzed."

Nikki Jenkins adds:

"It's like a pain on the inside that nothing or no one can reach. Imagine the deepest hurt you have ever experienced. Now imagine being in that pain and state of mind day in and day out."

No Idea How Depression Feels

How Does Depression Feel To You?It's part of the human condition to want people to understand what we are going through. Relationships are based on that. To some extent, everyone has experienced physical pain and can imagine what extreme physical pain feels like. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of mental pain. That's one important reason why we hear people say things like, "just pull yourself up by your bootstraps" and other irritating sayings on this list of worst things to say to someone who is depressed.

Even if a person hasn't directly experienced extreme physical pain, we've seen it portrayed enough in movies to know what it looks and feels like. How does depression feel? Maybe if we had regular portrayals of depression in the media, there wouldn't be so many clueless people.
