Personality Disorders Explained
The term personality disorder is a misleading term that sounds harsh. Taken literally, it sounds like someone has something wrong with his or her personality. It seems like a negative judgment; therefore, any of the diagnoses using personality disorder as part of the term carries with it a significant amount of stigma. Knowing what personality disorders really are can help reduce this misunderstanding.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), a personality disorder is a pattern of behavior that
- lasts over time
- is all-encompassing and inflexible
- begins in adolescence or early adulthood
- causes distress and impairment
To have a personality disorder means that someone's behaviors adhere to a rigid pattern that interferes with functioning. Relationships with self and others as well as ability to do certain tasks are negatively impacted, but this has nothing to do with someone's identity or worth.
There are 10 different types of personality disorders. These are organized into three distinct clusters that describe how people perceive the world and interact in the world.
Because personality disorders are patterns of perceiving and interacting, they can't be treated with medication (Personality Disorder Treatment). There are ways to manage personality disorders, though, and people diagnosed with a personality disorder can live a full life.
