Being a Mom with Mental Illness: My Questions and Concerns
In 2016, my life changed forever when I became a mom for the first time, but my mental illness has made my new role as a parent sometimes challenging. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder 10 years before giving birth to our daughter, and I have been doing really well with medication for the last several years. Being a mom with a mental illness comes with additional parenting concerns specific to mental illness.
Our daughter is now 18 months old. Stress and lack of sleep sometimes cause my schizoaffective disorder symptoms to break through. I also have concerns, as my daughter gets older and more aware that her mom has a mental illness (Impact of a Parent's Mental Illness on Children).

My mom is very sick has a mental illness and it is making her brain believe she's seeing bugs and parasites and she is not.
I can only imagine how difficult that is to navigate. I'm hopeful that both of you have support through this tough situation, but if you're looking for some resources, this is a great place to start on HealthyPlace.com: https://www.healthyplace.com/other-info/resources/mental-health-hotline-numbers-and-refer…. Whether you use those resources or not, I wish nothing but the best for you and your mother.

What an important post! I appreciate you sharing this, and I know there are so many others out there who appreciate it as well. Mental illness is often times something that we think of in a silo, only in terms of those with the illness, but we know this isn't true. Being a mother is something that calls for support, with or without mental illness. Being open and honest is a fantastic foundation for real connection and success.
