Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Building Self-Esteem

Most of us are familiar with imposter syndrome. We tend to feel like we are not good enough, even in areas where we typically excel, and end up sabotaging many aspects of our life, including relationships and professional development.  

When I got my current job, I felt like I was not good enough for the role. I second-guessed every move and did not take action on many great ideas because I had convinced myself that I wasn't as capable or smart as others thought. This ended up damaging not only my confidence but also my self-esteem. I went from this bold careerist ready to take on any challenge to avoiding new challenges for fear of failing or being exposed as a fraud. How can you overcome imposter syndrome and grow both professionally and personally? 
This article will look at the various ways to overcome imposter syndrome and build self-esteem.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities, talents, or achievements. You feel like you are a fraud, and whatever you do, despite the quality, is not good enough. People with imposter syndrome often believe their success is due to luck rather than their skills and hard work. They may feel like they are not worthy of their achievements or are "faking it" in their personal or professional lives.

Symptoms of Imposter Syndrome

The most common symptom of imposter syndrome is feelings of self-doubt. You question every decision, and in most cases, you fail to take action on your ideas because you feel they are not good enough. 

Other symptoms include: - downplaying accomplishments, holding back from reaching attainable goals, fear of being seen as a failure, and crediting luck or other reasons other than your skills for any success.

Tips for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

  • Recognize your accomplishments

Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, both small and big. In my case, keeping a record of my achievements and reviewing them regularly helped me regain my confidence. It helped me learn more about my strengths and abilities and what I can do better.

  • Practice positive self-talk

Words hold so much power, and sometimes they may cause self-doubt. Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations and statements focusing on your strengths and capabilities.

  • Stop comparing

We all have different abilities, and comparing your achievements to others will only damage your self-esteem.

  • Challenge yourself

Embrace new opportunities and experiences, even if they feel scary or uncomfortable. But as you do so, it is important to set realistic goals.

  • Lastly, seek support.

It is okay to ask for help. You can talk to a trusted friend or therapist.

Overall, overcoming imposter syndrome does not have to be challenging. It all starts with self-awareness. When you recognize your potential and take ownership of your achievement, you start believing in yourself more, increasing self-esteem and growth in other aspects of your life.
