How to Use Visualization to Feel Better

At a time when the outside world feels chaotic, I've found myself turning inward as much as possible by using visualization to feel better. It's one of my favorite ways to block out circumstances and events that aren't within my control by visualizing things that make me feel happy.

As Jack Canfield explains,

"Visualization and affirmations allow you to change your beliefs, assumptions, and options about the most important person in your life -- YOU!"1

During visualization, you have the power to go to a blissful place whenever you want. Use it to your advantage whenever you're struggling to find happiness in your life.

2 Easy Visualization Techniques to Use

Using visualization is simple and can be practiced anytime, anywhere. These tried and true techniques get me to a better feeling place fast. They can do the same for you if you're willing to detach yourself from everything around you for a short amount of time.

Try one (or both) options when you're feeling down and need a quick pick me up. 

  1. What are you grateful for right now? Take the very first thought that comes to mind and spend at least 30 seconds visualizing that gratitude. Who is with you? Where are you? What about this moment makes you feel grateful?
  2. What do you want your life to look like one year from today? Visualize it as clearly as possible. Where do you live and work? Who do you spend your time with? Spend at least two minutes focusing here.

In both instances, consider how you feel. Hold onto that positive feeling for as long as you can. Set a timer for one, two, or even five minutes. Can you stay in your visualization for that long? If so, you're in for a peaceful, heartfelt experience.

Moving forward, each time you notice a negative thought flowing into your mind, quickly move right back into one of your visualizations. The more you practice, the better you'll get at this. And it's a great tool that I love having in my back pocket when life feels hard. With the ability to quickly escape into a safe, gratitude-filled place life's waves feel more manageable.

I absolutely love those techniques! There is something so incredibly simple but powerful about both of them, number one in particular (and of course, when we start to focus on gratitude, we find more things to be grateful for). Visualization is a powerful tool to help bring one into the present moment, to help find perspective, and maybe create a little space from our problems and worries.
