A Simple Breathing Exercise Reduces Stress, Creates Serenity

March 2, 2016 Arley Hoskin, CMPS

I did a simple, breathing exercise before I started to type this blog. I do this six second breathing exercise every time I sit down at the computer to clear my mind and calm my soul. This easy breathing exercise can create serenity for you, too.

What Is A Breathing Exercise?

Simply put, breathing exercises are conscious, focused breaths. Think of breathing exercises like physical exercises. Most people walk every day without thinking about their steps. When you run or power walk for exercise you are taking time to focus on that physical activity. When you do breathing exercises you are taking to time to focus on your breaths. Using proper breathing techniques can help calm your mind and train your brain to produce steady, even breaths.

Why Try A Breathing Exercise?

I started using breathing exercises several years ago as a way to ease anxiety. The more I practiced intentional breathing the more natural it became. Over time, I realized that when I did my breathing exercises every day I was a more relaxed person. For me, it seems to be a form of preventative care for stress and anxiety (Treating Anxiety: Self-Care? Why Bother).

Breathing exercises also help me in meditation. I am a much calmer person since incorporating conscious breathing into my daily routine. I often incorporate breathing exercises into other stress reducing activities, such as adult coloring.
