How to Handle a Treatment Professional On a Power Trip

September 30, 2016 Becky Oberg

Do you know how to handle a treatment professional on a power trip? Sometimes the field of mental health draws the wrong people, especially when treatment philosophy is the social control model. I once overheard a nurse say to a patient "You do what we tell you, when we tell you." Another psychiatrist told a patient who made a sarcastic comment about wearing diapers "If that's what you want I can make it happen." The same psychiatrist told me "I can go on the word of a social worker if I want." When a treatment professional is on a power trip, it is important to know how to handle them (What Mental Health Professionals Don’t Know about Clients).

Treatment professionals aren't perfect - sometimes your treatment professional may go on a power trip. Here's what to do if that happens to you.In this video, I talk about how to handle a treatment professional on a power trip. The best strategy is to go along as much as you can and find a new treatment professional as soon as possible. Be wary of anyone who practices the social control model and look for someone who practices the recovery model--someone who is willing to go to bat for you, someone who has your back, someone who works with you instead of controlling you.

You deserve recovery, not control.

I'm so done with abusive doctors. Some of them walk around like they are gods, while doing harm to their patients.

my primary care physician let it be known in the 8-years that he has treated me for pain management and basic health that he holds the power to my care and health and could hurt me and anytime. He had me to word games with him and he was completely obviously on a power trip. Doctors are supposed to help the patients but this doctor would help me and then hold it over my head then he could just stop. and just the other day he decided that he was going to stop helping me I'm a recording artist who has been making album since 1985 which total 20 full-length LP's. I have 9 years of college But I'm not a doctor and it's terrible will a doctor lets you know then he holds the power to your comfort or misery
